Finding innovative logo expressions within strict corporate brand guidelines is a real challenge. This watershed execution enabled the logo to become a branding element. With no time or budget to shoot photography, I illustrated the supporting characters. The result was a unified marketing campaign with a family focus for New York City, Detroit, and Minneapolis.

The initial ask was for a digitally printed, one-sided 8.5 x 11 program. Expanding to a two-sided 11 x 17 wasn’t a budget buster, but adding the map to the backside was. I felt it was needed so I donated my time to create the very useful visual key to hip restaurants, coffee shops and watering holes within a 5 mile radius of the conference hotel.

RCA competes in big box retail, warehouses and club stores — environments where customers see packaging that was formerly meant for the backroom only. The visual dominance of a box for a big-screen TV can be extremely influential in the purchase decision. The packaging strategy was to visually imply exactly what a customer expects from HD technology: intense color, heroically-proportioned product and high production values.

A “Green TV” needed a sustainable packaging strategy, which would eliminate waste of any kind. The branding and labeling is done on a piece of uncoated paperboard that can be easily separated and recycled. It is held to the body of the clamshell package by reusable natural rubber bands. The body of the package is cast in Biofoam, an expanded foam product made from corn starch. After the product is removed, the package can be easily dissolved in water.
